Has the Free Enterprise Worked for Globalization?

The recent global recession and economic crisis affected numbers of people worldwide. As a result of the fear of continued shocks, several critics are pointing to the effects of globalization and private enterprises as the cause of these problems. Globalization has often meant or been linked to the free market system, and therefore increased de-regulation measures.

The recent global financial crisis, however, has influenced the curtailing of deregulation and globalization in a number of economies. For example in the United States, President Obama signed into law a Bill for several regulations to reform the financial markets. This comes as the United States faces unemployment of about 9.7 percent, Spain at a rate of 19.7 percent and the United Kingdom at 7.9 percent.

While globalization may have some positive effects to bring the people around the world closer together, the effects of globalization may also be problematic due to the increasing internationalization of crime and criminals. This has been evident with Japanese criminals and their criminal organizations as they have expanded partnerships with other overseas crime syndicates, according to the recent Japanese National Police Agency's white paper.

These partnerships are often formed in order to smuggle illegal drugs and launder money. In addition, these links have helped bring foreign criminal groups and their operations into Japan. One popular form of globalized crime include the swindlers who lure Japanese nationals into sending money overseas or tricking them to travel to China for false job offers.

Views on Globalization by a Gaming Company

The Japanese gaming company, Square Enix, has joined in the discussion of globalization by putting forward its own views on the subject as it relates to their company and industry. Yochi Wada, the president of Square Enix, has often expressed that the company has included globalization plans as part of its strategy. Nevertheless, this giant gaming company has never been very forthcoming about what "globalization" actually means apart from increased sales of their gaming products overseas.

Perhaps it's reflective of how many private companies may find it difficult to proactively contribute to the globalization discussion, particularly as the word "globalization" and its effects are even debated in political, academic and social forums. Some would argue that "globalization" for gaming companies could mean the increased westernization of its services and products to appeal to a Western audience.

RedLine Denver recently showcased an exhibit showing the value of sustainability in an ever changing world impacted by globalization. The exhibit, entitled "Artist's Footprints" highlights the outer edges of life and art via "innovative systems of creation and production." The featured art series of the exhibit is Jessica Moon Bernstein's work which focuses on the influence of globalization on culture and the environment.

Bernstein was inspired to emphasize a theme of globalization after she had lived and worked in Mongolia for over fifteen years. Her artwork encapsulates her thoughts on globalization, which in her view, threatens to overwhelm the world through consumerism and environmental degradation. Her artwork encourages people to maintain preserve ethnic identities and natural environments in spite of the effects of globalization.

The Globalization of Sport

Is it possible for the effects of globalization to impact sport, too? Apparently it is possible. Globalization has had an enormous impact on the way that telecommunications have broadcast sporting events across the globe. This had had beneficial impacts for sporting fans worldwide as they can keep up to date with their favourite sporting events.

While fans can watch any sporting event occurring in countries other than their own, globalization has also had implications in the way that sporting fans support their local teams. It seems that more and more people are beginning to support teams from other countries, and it can be a very strange thing for sports where people traditionally only backed their local team. For example, there are a number of Americans who support the United Kingdom's Manchester United soccer team, whereas some people from England were spotted supporting the United States' MLS team.
